Quagga: half zebra, half horse extinct since 1883

One of Africa's most famous extinct animals, the quagga was a subspecies of the plains zebra, which was once found in great numbers in South Africa's Cape Province and the southern part of the Orange Free State. It was distinguished from other zebras by having the usual vivid marks on the front part of the body only. In the mid-section, the stripes faded and the dark, inter-stripe spaces became wider, and the hindquarters were a plain brown. The name comes from a Khoikhoi word for zebra and is onomatopoeic, being said to resemble the quagga's call.

The quagga was originally classified as an individual species, Equus quagga, in 1788. Over the next fifty years or so, many other zebras were described by naturalists and explorers. Because of the great variation in coat patterns (no two zebras are alike), taxonomists were left with a great number of described "species", and no easy way to tell which of these were true species, which were subspecies, and which were simply natural variants. Long before this confusion was sorted out, the quagga had been hunted to extinction for meat, hides, and to preserve feed for domesticated stock. The last wild quagga was probably shot in the late 1870s, and the last specimen in captivity died on August 12, 1883 at the Artis Magistra zoo in Amsterdam.

Because of the great confusion between different zebra species, particularly among the general public, the quagga had become extinct before it was realized that it appeared to be a separate species. The quagga was the first extinct creature to have its DNA studied. Recent genetic research at the Smithsonian Institution has demonstrated that the quagga was in fact not a separate species at all, but diverged from the extremely variable plains zebra.

Introduction:

There are a large number of animals out there that are on the edge of extinction. I have listed below the top 5 rarest animals among the whole world. Now known that these are the rarest animals at the time, action has been taken to help save these beautiful animals. I'm sure there are many others out there that are close to extinction but here is a list of five that have been recorded.

#1- The Pinta Island Tortoise - This tortoise from the Galapagos Islands is the rarest animal of them all. There is only one of them still alive. They were said to be extinct 30 years ago until a ranger happen to find one. They have been searching for a female tortoise so they can get the Pinta Island Tortoise back on the map.

#2 - Baiji - The Baiji is better known as the river dolphin. They are usually found outside of china. The reason that has caused these mammals to become so rare is the fact that these dolphins were competing for their food with the human race. The humans would hunt fish and it just so happened to be what these rare dolphins eat. There have been reports that this species is now extinct and they are in search of them as we speak.

#3 - The Vancouver Island Marmot - This rare animal can be found in the Vancouver Islands in British Columbia. They are said to congregate in the mountainous regions. In the year 2000, the Canadian researchers found the population of these rare animals to be at an all time low of just 75. They have since then put about half of that number in rehab facilities where they are trying to mate them and get the population back up to around 400 - 500 individual Marmots.

#4 - Seychelles Sheath-tailed Bat - They can be found just north of Madagascar in the Seychelles Islands. There is said to be less then 100 of these bats left here on earth. Scientists don't know much about this specific type of bat but it is said that an amount of 500 or more would be enough to keep this species from becoming extinct.

#5 - Javan Rhino - There is said to be only around 50 of this type of Rhino left and researchers have noticed that they were only found in Indonesia and Vietnam. The animal has been poached for its horn and is said to be used for medical reasons. The humans have caused this animal to become one of the top five rarest animals in the world.

Conclusion:

Here are the world's rarest animals. Some of them could already be extinct but all we know is that there are people out there that care. All around the world there have been researchers and scientists to gather these rare animals in hope of repopulating these species. Do your part in caring for animals and take care of your pets and report anyone who is abusing any type of animal. If you just so happen to have a little extra room and a lonely kid then you can also adopt a pet from your nearest animal shelter. Adopting pets is another key way in saving some animals lives.
